Civil society is very weak in Somalia and organising outside clans rarely occurs. Together with the Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO) the Palme Center therefore support the trade union movement in Somalia.

Somalia is one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world and over half of the labour force is unemployed. The Somali trade union confederation Festu recently joined the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and we support their efforts to organise more workers. The aim of the cooperation is to strengthen Festu so that the union can become a more influential player within the labour movement in Somalia.

Facts Somalia

There is an ongoing civil war in Somalia since over two decades. The country has been torn apart by the war and the internationally recognised government only controls the area around the capital Mogadishu. The government has earned legitimacy by including representatives from the largest clans in the parliament. Somalia has embarked on a new phase of peace-building, stability and recovery, but the situation is still fragile.
