One year after the start of the mainly peaceful protests in Syria, thousands of people have been killed and tens of thousands have been arrested. The Joint Special Envoy of the UN and the League of Arab States Kofi Annan has negotiated a ceasefire that started the 12th of April. However, according to reports from Syria, the violence between government forces and opposition has resumed.

George Sabra is the Spokesperson of the Syrian National Council (SNC) that was founded in October 2011 to support the Syrian people’s revolution and their fight for freedom, dignity and democracy. Sabra has a background as a leading person of the forbidden opposition party Democratic People’s Party. During 2011 he was arrested twice after publicly been expressing his support for the peaceful demonstrators, and rejected the thought of initiating a dialogue with the government as long as the security forces attack and subject peaceful activists to violence. George Sabra was imprisoned in eight years between 1987 and 1995.
