SOLIDARITY STATEMENT

This morning, ahead of planned demonstrations, police raided the offices of Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions and arrested it´s leadership.

The trade union federation had called for demonstrations at ZCTU regional offices in Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru, Mutare, Masvingo and Chinhoyi. ZCTU called for a stop on the 2% tax on every electronic transactions, to stop the price hike madness on goods, that the harassment of street vendors should stop and to have actual access to the US dollars from their bank accounts.

It is with great concern we learn of the detainment of ZCTU Zimbabwe president Peter Mutasa and secretary general Japhet Moyo.

The development is deeply troubling, it is of importance that the right to demonstrate and call to end the newly adopted policies since its impact on the trade union members are severe.
The trade unions should be able to demonstrate and voice the concerns of their membership. We demand the immediate release of the trade union activists.
