EQUALITY AND WORKERS RIGHTS
Advancing equality and worker’s rights
Global inequality is increasing, and workers’ rights are under growing pressure across all regions. The Palme Center works to promote workers’ rights and social equality.People around the world face increasing pressure from a global economy that often prioritises growth over rights and fair conditions. The gap between rich and poor is wide – and growing. According to Oxfam, billions of people have become poorer in recent years, while extreme wealth continues to rise.
Trade union activists face threats, harassment and, in some cases, imprisonment or violence. According to the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), the situation for workers has steadily worsened, with 2025 marking the worst year on record. In many countries, fundamental labour rights are severely restricted.
What we do:
- We support trade unions, because strong and democratic organisations are essential for fair wages and decent working conditions.
- We stand with trade union activists, so that threats and harassment do not silence those who defend workers’ rights.
- We focus on the most vulnerable groups in the labour market, including women and workers in the informal economy.
- We build alliances between trade unions, civil society and political actors, because lasting change requires collective action.
- We promote knowledge of equality and workers’ rights through popular education.
- In Sweden, we contribute to public debate to defend international trade union cooperation and development support.
