GENDER EQUALITY

Progress on gender equality has been significant, but in recent years we have seen setbacks. In many contexts, rights are being challenged and rolled back, including as a result of growing conservative and anti-gender movements.

Women make up a large share of those living in poverty and have less social, political and economic power. They are disproportionately affected by discrimination and insecure working conditions. Gender-based violence, including sexual violence, remains widespread and is also used as a weapon in conflict.

At the same time, LGBTQ+ people face increasing restrictions on their rights, along with rising levels of discrimination and hate crimes.

What we do:

• We support women’s organisations to strengthen their capacity and work to challenge discriminatory norms and structures, and to prevent violence.
• We support trade unions to promote gender equality in the labour market and strengthen women’s ability to claim their rights.
• We work with progressive political parties and movements to increase women’s participation and influence, including in leadership and decision-making.
• We connect women in the Swedish labour movement with partners globally to share experience and build solidarity.
• Together with partners, including the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS), we contribute to advancing feminist policy and perspectives, including in the EU.
• We work in alliances with democratic and progressive actors to counter anti-gender movements and defend equal rights.
