JUST TRANSITION
Sustainability through a just transition – countering climate change
The climate crisis and the destruction of nature pose an urgent threat to our future. The task of our time is to build more equal societies within the planet’s limits. The Palme Center works for a green transition that is both fair and democratic. The effects of the climate crisis are already visible in wildfires, floods and droughts. Biodiversity is being lost at an alarming rate. At the same time, current economic systems drive both high emissions and growing inequality.
This undermines fundamental rights – including the rights to health, food, water, housing, education and secure livelihoods. Those who are already most vulnerable are hit hardest, while the crisis is driven by the richest and most powerful.
For the Palme Center, a just transition is central to all our work. The fight against poverty and inequality cannot succeed without addressing the climate crisis. At the same time, without greater equality, we cannot slow it down.
What we do:
- We engage the international labour movement in advancing a just transition to sustainable and inclusive societies.
- We support trade unions in influencing governments and the private sector through social dialogue and advocacy, so that workers have security and a voice in the transition.
- We promote a democratic green transition, where local communities can influence decisions that affect their lives and environments.
- Together with our partners, we develop tools and training to engage members and build alliances for Just Transition.
- We advocate for a just transition in Sweden and the EU, including faster action by high-income countries, climate finance and reduced emissions from the wealthiest.
- In Sweden, we have initiated an Alliance for a Just Climate Transition, bringing civil society actors together.
