JUST TRANSITION

The effects of the climate crisis are already here; wildfires, floods and droughts. Life in nature is being lost at an alarming rate.

This undermines fundamental human rights such as rights to health, food, water, housing, education and secure livelihoods. The most vulnerable are hit hardest by a crisis that is driven by the rich and powerful. The root of both planetary destruction and growing inequality is the current economic system.

For the Palme Center, a just transition is central to all our work. The fight against poverty and inequality cannot succeed without strong climate and environmental action. And vice versa: Without greater equality, we cannot keep our planet safe.

What we do:

• We engage the international labour movement, including policy makers, to advance a Just Transition to economies that prioritise human wellbeing within planetary boundaries.
• We support trade unions in influencing governments and the private sector through social dialogue and advocacy, so that workers have security and a voice in the transition.
• We promote a democratic green transition, where local communities can influence decisions that affect their lives and environments.
• Together with our partners, we develop tools and training to engage people and build alliances for Just Transition.
• We advocate for a just transition in Sweden and the EU, as high-income countries need to cut emissions faster, provide climate finance and reduce emissions from the wealthiest.
• In Sweden, we have initiated an Alliance for a Just Climate Transition, bringing 50+ civil society actors together.
